college football, birthday boys & belonging

months ago, madison had a fabulous idea–how ’bout we celebrate dad & take everyone to the college football hall of fame for his birthday? we can celebrate trevor’s november birthday all together as well! so she & caroline wrapped up a little football & with his “you da man” card, they explained what our day would hold. well, we had an absolute blast!! the hall of fame opened in atlanta back in august…and it is so awesome!! truth be told, i teared up in the intro movie. seriously. besides getting chills over & over ( what’s bigger than college ball in the south?) all that talk about coaches calling forth the best in their team ( dan coached for years and years) , the players talking about working together, boys sharing how because of their ball playing they were the first in their family to go to college….it was beautiful. for real. the place is uber cool, chock full of facts & trivia, interactive, high tech, and super fun. the gigantic penley painting in the entrance is insane!!0102030405061213

truth be told, back in august ( when the hall of fame opened) i had no idea what our holidays would be like this year. would dan be receiving chemo? would he be sick? i just wanted to pinch myself multiple times yesterday as i was SO thankful he’s well. SO thankful!

one more thing. back in the summer ( i still need to share about this!) we visited savannah a couple times at chicfila corporate where she was interning. talk about an amazing opportunity!! i will. later. but one of the things we saw at corporate is their new innovations for new stores. i was oohing & aahing all over the trendy wood tables in this one particular area when one of the corporate chickfila guys comes over & explains the story behind the tables. read for yourself~

so…underneath these beautiful tables is the story of the artisan who made it. and if you crawl onto the floor ~people may or may not think you’re a weirdo but too bad for them because they’re missing out on THE best thing in chickfila~ you can snap a shot of this story….

“thank god i am truly free.”

love compassion & grace are INDEED powerful tools. so…if you’re in a chickfila ( perhaps up north? i think that’s where some of these newbies are heading) you might wanna look underneath your lovely centerpiece….

1009everyone wants to just belong right? i pray that yesterday for you was a place of belonging and if not, i pray that in your heart you know you belong to the heavenly father who sees you. who knows every heartache and disappointment and tears you’ve cried…and HE says, come to me all you who are weary and i will give you rest. you belong to him. always.

Peggy - oh Paige, this made me cry! Such a sweet, sweet thing! We normally drive through Chick-fil-a as it is down in Indy and we are normally on our way home. However I am going to make a point of checking to see if we have any of these new tables and sneak a peek underneath.

and the college hall of fame moved? I had no idea! Oh i feel silly because we were planning a trip up there this next summer as it is only about 1 1/2 hours from our house. I guess I ought to have asked Ian as he keeps abreast of these things. Ha ha!

Have a truly lovely weekend surrounded by loved ones! Pray for us as we are taking in a foreign exchange student mid-year. It will be okay! (part of the prayers are to finish the conversion of a girlie studio/guest room to one suited for an 17 year old boy.)

Amanda Morris - So, funny story…My husband is a basketball coach in Barrow County. We were at a Thanksgiving tournament last weekend and between games he was In conversation with this tall somewhat familiar looking man. I walked over and Kevin introduced us. “Dan” was his name. Why does he look so familiar, I asked myself. Then I realized, it was YOUR Dan!! I went back to my seat and immediately pulled up your instagram. I showed Kevin your pictures and told him that I had recognized Dan through seeing them. He told me I should have said something to him but I was too embarrassed. It sounded a little “stalker-ish” in my mind! But I thought to myself, what a small world! I’m so glad he is in good health and y’all will be able to spend holidays focused on each other and not the what if’s. We plan on a trip to the hall of fame this month too!!

Merry Christmas to you and your family!!

p.s. Dan’s even taller and more handsome in person!

Tena - I may have noticed one of these beautiful tables at a Chick-Fil-A in Brentwood, TN. It was unique, lovely and took took center stage in the dining area. I wish I had known the story so I could have checked out the bottom. Thanks for the heads up. Next time I am in the area I will definitely be laying in the floor. 🙂
