the heart of a giver

posting about edie yesterday really made me think about several women, most, if not all of them, i’ve met through blogging, who’ve made a significant impact in my life.

it’s probably a weird phenomenon for those who don’t blog to think that one can become friends with a veritable stranger. a pen pal if you will.  however for those of you who do blog and who have made life long, heart friends, with many of these ‘veritable stranger’ you know exactly what i’m talking about.

i want to share with ya’ll about a certain friend. let’s call her jane.  i’ve hesitated to share about jane for of a couple reasons. let me try to make this clear & i hope you hear me as sincere as i can be. i do not, no way jose, not for a second, share about her generosity to make you think “oh paige is a bragger’. i’m not. but i’m going to go ahead and share today out of a couple reasons. jane has probably the most generous heart of anyone i’ve ever known. and two, jane knows her stuff-which i’m going to share with you. she loves jesus & loves to give extravagantly to those in her life.

here’s the kicker.

we’ve never met in real life.

i know. right?

jane read my blog a couple years ago and contacted me about supporting one of my girls in a mission trip. since that time she has done that many times. she called two summers ago and asked if i’d ever heard of Passion. um yes. Passion, also known as life changer for thousands of college kids and one savannah knudsen. she told me the lord had put it on her heart to support savannah & several friends of hers to go to passion. the list goes on. and on. she has continued to blow me away by her extravagant heart for others.

well jane also has for years gifted her closest friends at christmas with “her favorites”.  last year i was headed out the door for a doctors appointment that i was super scared about. minutes before dan & i were to leave, the UPS dude showed up with a ginormous box. inside were about 20 individually wrapped gifts and a letter explaining why each was one of jane’s favorites. i didn’t share last year for the reason i listed above.

but she has given over and over to our family and i can’t keep it inside any longer. i want to publicly tell her how much she’s taught my girls and their friends too.  we have talked many times about how jane has loved people she has never and may never meet. and we don’t even know what she does in her own ‘real life’! can you imagine?  she has stayed in touch with savannah’s friends who she sponsored for passion and prayed for them in their walk with jesus.

while jane & i have never sat together & sipped coffee we have talked on the phone & prayed for each other. i know one of these days we really will meet in “real life”. veritable strangers now heart friends despite the half dozen states between us.

so without further aidue, here is jane’s gift for 2013 of her favorites. i’ll add her words too.

hobo lauren wallet/clutch. simply put can hold all my things & look stylish doing it.YSL noir radical mascara. amazing.tory burch cuff. enough trio. lip gloss & polish in chanel. no brainer. ( i LOVE vertigo–perfect not to harsh black/platinum)ole henriksen truth serum. liquid gold for slightly aging skin.dark chocolate sea salt caramels from nordstroms. oh my word. melt in your mouth bag that held the trio shown above. so cute!measuring hedgies from anthropologie. are they cute or what?? cutest kitchen gadget award.personalized stationary. a must.nina garcia’s the 100 pieces every stylish woman should own. such a great little book! ( thankfully she supports wayfarers, cuff bracelets & converse. )fresh soy face cleanser. gold standard of cleansers in my book. powerful enough to dissolve eye makeup but not to drying for my dry face.clarisonic mia. handy little guy that will completely change the surface of your skin.kenra thermal blow dry spray. balm of gilead for my dry hair. use sparingly.(insert goofie selfie. & personal endorsement. ya’ll i hate my hair. only one level behind how much i hate my waist line. i have very dry hair. i have to color my hair approximately every 17 -21 days. it’s awful. i hate my hair. anyway. this spray is wonderful. not only does it make my hair smell divine, it has honestly changed the texture of my hair. instead of feeling dry and dull on day 2 & 3 it smells wonderful and feels soft and manageable)

(by the way, my phone cover was a gift from jane in last year’s box. her favorite -erin condren)

i always trust jane’s tips regarding skin care & cosmetics. as i said, sister knows her stuff.

i think it’s an awesome idea to try to take this gift giving philosophy and tweak it to make it work for you. i saw some of my instagram friends host a favorites party for their friends at Christmas. say invite 5 friends. each person bring 5 wrapped of one of their favorite things ( calender, fragrance, scarf, whatever). you get the idea. i love knowing something i was gifted was a “favorite” of one of my friends or family members. makes it even all the more special.

while i know i could never give on this level financially, i know i can find a way to give “something” well thought, intentional and personal .

some of my favorite gifts ever have been in the form of a card.  a 5×7 card. just thinking that someone thought of me. took the time to go the store. picked out a card and then wrote, with pen and paper, a note to me. those are magical gifts.

so….go forth & love each other well my friends. whether it be in the form of a casserole like edie, a hallmark card or maybe you can be someone’s oprah and gift your favorites, go forth and love others well

Proverbs 11:25 A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

Romans 12:8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

Stacey - Wow, Jane does have the heart of a giver and she knows how to do it well. Some people really are so good at thinking of others and giving. I’m always a day late but striving to do better. 🙂

Suzanne - Paige, you know I’ve
enjoyed getting peeks
into your goodie box
on IG. Love this idea
and plan on putting one
together for one of my
besties who is once again
battling breast cancer.

I once had a fairy Godmother
like this. Her sister was
married to a big Hollywood
producer, and she sent
so many sweet little girl
clothes to my friend, that
my friend would choose
a bunch and pass then on
for my Elizabeth. My word,
they were little clothes from
France, Italy, England…..
mary janes and smocked
dresses and velvet coats ~
oh my!

Love these heart connections
via blogging!

Jennifer - What a sweet, generous friend you have! Thank you for sharing about her and also your great goodies! Anyone who could take that kind-heartedness and turn it into something ugly should look long and hard at their own heart. You are lucky to have one another, “real life friends” or not. 🙂

Kerri - wow! I do remember you telling us about her sponsoring the girls for Passion a while back. I have a friend who is so super sweet and has money to be able to spend on friends and while I do not, I try to offer my time and an extra hand whenever I can. She owns a ladies’ consignment shop and although she doesn’t ask for help often, I always make sure I am there for her when she needs it. and that tori burch bracelet~oh my! some day I will make it down to Georgia so we can chat over lunch!

Laurie overholtzer - Paige, I’m with you..I couldn’t give on this financial level, but I love the lesson here. Follow your heart and bless a sister when you can in any way you can. I do this for my (birth) sister who lives very far away, and the latest box contained vintage laces, buttons, and fabrics she loves so much. It’s such a great feeling to know you made someone feel special and loved.

Thank you for sharing. Your posts always have a great message in them….that’s
why I follow you.

May the Lord richly bless you~

Deborah - What a great post Paige. Your sweet friend gives us all (especially women) a great lesson on generosity. I love to give family and friends, albeit on a less grand scale, little tokens of my gratitude of how much they mean to me in my life. I also love this idea of a favorite things party and am already planning one this year for all my favorite friends. Possibly this spring or summer ” favorite things” to spare us from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season which seems to begin for our family in October. Thanks for sharing and I love, love, love your Tory Burch cuff. Have a blessed day.

Stacie - What a wonderful and generous friend!! A friend of mine likes to send “happy day mail” – it could be something as simple as an article torn from a magazine that reminded her of me – love those type of thoughtful gifts!!

January 23, 2013 - 3:51 pm

Tammie - Paige, she must have seen what the rest of us all see in you and what you have allowed us to see in your family. You seem like a precious family. I know that I wish I could live next door to you, become your friend. I must say that “you have been a great inspiration to me daily through your blog” and for that I want to THANK YOU. You deserve what she has sent to you and I don’t doubt that you have given to many people as well, even if it didn’t come in a UPS or a big box. Your gift to me comes in my email with your blog title on it.

Amy Avery - So awesome Paige! “Jane” is indeed a wonderful friend who not only gives you wonderful material gifts but more importantly has given you the gift of prayer and encouragement. It all comes full circle as I feel you in turn give that to all of us who regularly meet you here in your blog home and consider you a dear friend although we haven’t met. Thanks for sharing about Jane. I’m gonna have to try that hair stuff, because my hair is as dry as it comes. Have a great night!

LLH Designs - I wish we all had a Jane in our life. Oh, wait. As soon as I wrote that, I literally thought: we do. It’s God the Father. He lavishes us with His love. It may not come in the form of 20 individually wrapped little luxuries, but His gifts are RICH. My birthday is tomorrow, so I’m thinking a lot about gifts. I love that you friend “Jane” is using her love language to show you the love of the Father. Think you can send her my way for my birthday? Ha! Ha! xoxo!

Michelle Whitaker - I think many of us could be more generous. I know I can. I love this idea. I might try this “favorite things” idea for Valentine’s Day with a few people. Thank you for sharing.
