on the injured list. again.

poor kiddo.

last year, almost to the date, her nose was broke during a cheerleading stunt.  she needed surgery and was down for the count for a few weeks ( from cheering and from working out)

in august she was stretching at the gym and called me to tell me her knee cap had slipped out of place. to make a long story short, she ended up with a torn meniscus and a torn mcl.  she needed surgery and was down for the count for weeks. truth be told, she’s still in physical therapy for that and not completely cleared for exercise ( running, etc)

now let me tell you, she has been working her tail off for over a year. at the gym constantly and watching what she’s eating. she has done amazing.

this year she decided to cheer basketball instead of football and competition. which worked out well since she’s been out with the knee injury. so saturday, basketball cheerleading had a workshop. all day.  in hindsight ( that perpetually clear hindsight view) i shouldn’t have let her go all. it was like seven hours).  well she came home pretty sore. i figured it was her first major exertion since her leg injury.  she’s a base and they can get pretty beat up catching the girls who fly, especially after hours and hours.

by the next day she continued to be sore. that night she came in just before i went to bed and said her side was really really sore. sharp stabbing pain sore.  so i had her recount the day. turns out she had fallen during a stunt and the fly fell on top of her. oh dear. called the doctor the next morning and was reminded that there really isn’t anything done for broken ribs other than rest.  so we went in anyway for xrays.

doctor warned me prior to the xray that they are often times inconclusive, the ribs being hard to get a good film of…and they were. so they’re treating her for probable fractured ribs.

well all during this time she’s complained of headaches. she’s come home from school early and fallen asleep the last few days. she never ever ever takes naps. like ever. ( thank you taylor swift for the jingle)  i’d walk into her room and ask her why she was working with all the shades pulled to which she’d reply that the light hurt her eyes.  she’d text me from school in tears after a test saying it was hard for her to think and focus. she’s having a hard time sleeping at night because of the rib pain. so hard to tell what’s related to what, etc.

so, i had her recount the day. again. did she hit her head when she fell? no, but “i got kicked in the head several times during the stunts”…”but that happens all the time in cheerleading mom”….okay.

so headed to the pediatrician yesterday morning because by this time i’m pretty concerned. she didn’t present with any findings that would explain the unusual ( for her) headaches. i love our pediatrician. she’s super thorough and knows my girls well. she couldn’t rule out a concussion.( and no, madison has not had the impact test prior to cheering either).  so for now she’s been put on modified bedrest and told to do no brain strain.

broken nose. torn ligament. probable broken ribs. possible concussion…

praying she heals quickly. it’s tough to miss several days of school but that junior year is especially tough. this is the third if not fourth issue in less than a year. discouraging from a cheer standpoint and an exercise stand point.

by the way, these images were not this week…she’s not quite this smiley this week 🙁

Lori H - Lovely photos of your gorgeous girl. Hope she is back to “smiley” soon! And that Mom can relax too…so worrisome when the kids have aches and pains going on, and you just want the doctor to say “It is definately THIS, and we can fix them right up”. Inconclusive stinks.

becky - poor thing! and to think that people don’t consider cheer a “real” sport… i grew up doing competitive cheer and know it is some serious stuff. my husband, the orthopedic specialist, hates that i already have them involved in cheer. he has seen the cheer injuries.

btw, her eyes are AMAZING!

linda - Ohhh, miss lovely Madison. As a mother of four, very involved in sports, children, we have had our share of injuries from an ACL knee reconstruction for my then 14 yr. old, to a fractured jaw from snowboarding. It is completely devastating as parent to watch our kids suffer, staying out of activities for months on end, and all the while praying the injury will heal, and not affect the rest of their lives. Minnesota is a state leading the study on concussions. The ramifications of head trauma, and continued brain trauma is life changing. A good friend of mine, whose daughter was captain of the synchronized swim team at our high school, was training w/ the Olympics in Colorado
Springs a few yrs. ago, got kicked in the head and her life was completely altered…headaches, dizziness, nausea. Had to drop out of her senior of high school. It was unbelievably sad. My advice would be to really, really, really evaluate whether or not cheering is worth possibly altering the rest of your life…
Sorry :((( You all are in my thoughts and hoping for a quick and full recovery!!!! ps LOVE the boots 🙂

Suzanne - Feel better soon, sweet
girl! Lucky your {proud}
mama kept dogging the
docs, as bedrest sounds
like the right medicine,
for now, as hard as it is
to be down for the count.
Better to be gentle with
yourself now than have
a bigger setback, later.

Hugs to you, Paige, as
I know it hurts you, too….
