hi friends, i wanted to share The Becoming Conference with you! c’mon & join us august 8 & 9 in asheville, north carolina!

two gifted, talented, servant-hearted women, jen from balancing beauty & bedlam &  jenny from southern savers have planned a wonderful weekend full of encouragement to live intentionally by becoming more creative, purposeful, and frugal.  with both large group settings & smaller hands-on workshops, you will be led by a fantastic group of talented women.

my friends edie & ruth will be leading as well as many other names & beautiful faces i think you’ll recognize!!

i want to tell you a little more about this conference. this is a come as you are, barefoot if you’d like, sit beside me on the comfy sofa and drink coffee, casual, nothing fancy schmancy, weekend in the breathtaking beauty of asheville, north carolina. and ya’ll, the cost of the conference is $80 – $110 per person, depending on your accommodations. we recommend you bring a girlfriend &  benefit from the double occupancy rate. if you’re local and wish to drop in for saturday only, the cost is $62, which includes the conference sessions, Saturday lunch and gift bags. your conference fee of ball-park $100 includes everything…Included in this price is your conference fee, dinner on Friday, breakfast and lunch on Saturday, as well as your hotel for Friday evening – not to mention all the additional goodies we have in store from our sponsors. ya’ll. score.

and.

i’m really tickled ( & sorta nervous ) to be leading a photography workshop ( twice on saturday)!!

let me explain my heart for this workshop. primarily i want to encourage YOU! with YOUR skills & YOUR camera! encourage YOU to document your world & your legacy by becoming a story teller through YOUR photography.

~encourage you to use, whatever equipment you own, and capture your life, your everyday, your people who you love, every single day.  to dust off your “fancy, i use it only for life’s big events like holidays, vacations & graduations” camera, become friends with the owners manual–which will explain every single switch & setting of YOUR camera–and create ART.  i believe everyone of us can do this! whether via an iphone or a fancy canon 70D and a lens that’s worth more than your car. YOU can create memories and document your legacy, of your world, simply & beautifully!

~explain what it means to find & capture the light

~fun & super simple tips on how to photograph your little ones who are quite active and wiggly as well as your big ones who aren’t always excited to have their photo taken

~introduce you to some resources that can help you turn a simple capture into truly a piece of art

(on friday afternoon i’ll lead a hands-on, walk the grounds workshop. limited number availability.)

let me tell you what my workshop is not. i will not be explaining every single switch & setting on your nikon ( i shoot canon & i don’t know a thing about nikon) or your film camera or all the ins & outs of owning a dslr. as i mentioned earlier, you have an instruction manual with your camera that will fully explain those details to you much more clear than i could ever attempt. which is also the number advice i give everyone regarding their gear. i’m a creative with pretty minimal technical knowledge.  a self taught photographer who has never taken a single course on photography.  i tell you that because if i can create a beautiful image like this, on my phone, so can you! ( if you’re already shooting on full manual, this is probably not the course for you but there are several other workshops saturday that i think you’ll love!)–i say all that with a smile & a large dose of humility!

so please come join us for a sweet time together in august!!!

may i ask you a favor? if you were to come to a workshop such as this, i’d LOVE to hear what sorta questions you’d ask. if you have a second and could leave one or 50 in my comments i’d be ever so grateful. i might be working on a little project for the blog as well!

Joy G - What catches your eye, makes you scream “Stop the car!!!” and jump out to catch the shot?

Cause I do that. 🙂

June 25, 2014 - 8:53 pm

LuAnn - I have a million but I’ll start with how do you get the nerve to stop and not be embarrassed to drop to the ground to get just the right shot….how do you get the backgrounds right…I always seem to have the odd tree sticking out of a head or power line in the back ground. What about tips & tricks when your iPhone is all you have with you! Really want to join you in Aug….trying to find someone to go either me!

June 25, 2014 - 9:02 pm

Lemonade Makin Mama - I would LOVE to come to a workshop like that! No clue what I’d ask… lol but will you please come dress me? You just look so cute and I’m in need of help in that department!! Between you and Edie I think you could get me looking much cuter. 🙂

June 25, 2014 - 10:11 pm

Amber Summerrow - What was the very first thing that inspired you?

June 26, 2014 - 11:00 am

Christina - Pre Session Question: My husband gifted me a new D5100. There are lots of settings and switches, those things that I can’t even begin say how they all work “with” each other. Do I need to know a lot of that before I engage in this weekend in the mountains?

Conference Question: Is this conference conducive to “singles” – I will be by myself. And I’m not always comfy in those situations. But I will say that when I was reading your Serenbe post yday, my screen flickered and this Becoming post popped up – right in the middle of me scrolling thru your lovely pics – It must have been a sign, so I checked my calendar, and I’m avail that weekend and wouldn’t it be wonderful to go to Asheville … it IS 5h away so, might as well make a weekend of it and stay at the Old Edwards Inn on Sat PM too, right 🙂

Session Questions:
What’s in your camera bag, your “toolbox” – what are the “must haves” that you rely on?
Tricks for photographing landscape v people v food – you clearly have mastered all of these subjects. What’s the secret?
What type of editing do you do post-shoot for your blogposts and what is necessary for blog v portfolio?
What programs do you use / like for editing?

Goodness, I’m hogging your comments section.

June 26, 2014 - 2:43 pm

Ella - Example Question: How do you take indoor pictures without them being grainy?

June 26, 2014 - 2:53 pm

Natalie - You’re gonna be awesome! Wish I could be there and learn from you amazing women but alas, we’ll be in Seaside! Wish you were going with us! 🙂 And I don’t even know what I’d ask but I know I’d wanna glean all the wisdom and insight I could from you and Edie especially! xoxo… N

June 28, 2014 - 4:45 pm

Maureen - Paige, would you turn that beautiful photo above into a canvas like your others? I would love to buy that, I can’t stop staring at it. What do you think?

June 29, 2014 - 12:47 pm

Kitty - I’m registered and really looking forward to meeting you. 🙂 I am the WORST photographer on the planet. My questions: How do you compose your shots? And, how do you get that soft warm glow of sunlight without over-exposing the photo?

June 30, 2014 - 9:49 am

amy - i wish i could come to this conference and to your session! my question would be about posing people/children for photos. your pictures are always perfect and especially your girls really know how to model for the camera…what are the best angles, etc.

June 30, 2014 - 2:24 pm

Jen@thecottagenest - Oh I’m wishing I could attend this one. I’m not sure what I’d ask. I’d be humbled to be in the presence of such photography greatness! Maybe tips on composing a good shot? I feel like my eye for that is improving but sometimes I just can’t get the shot that feels right!

July 1, 2014 - 9:49 am

Linsey @ Bravehearted Beauty - Love the sound of your photo workshops! Sounds a lot like my Beauty Hunting Retreats. Being with you and a camera sounds heavenly! xoxo

July 2, 2014 - 8:14 pm

Louise - That last photo is amazing.

July 3, 2014 - 10:04 am

Alecia - I’m interested in the resources you mentioned for editing and what someone else asked…what’s in your camera bag…your tools, must haves on a shoot! Do you bring props to a shoot?
